Fashion designers have Fashion Week; interior designers have the Market. We meet with furniture designers, sit on countless sofas, get to know suppliers, and of course take in what is trending in luxury design. At Market this year, bouclé owned the spotlight in every showroom with all the top designers.
A classic makes a comeback
Bouclé, most often associated with the style of Coco Chanel, is having a major moment in posh home decor. The timeless trend adds softness, texture, and a touch of comfortable luxury to any space. Most often seen in white or cream today, bouclé became ubiquitous in upholstery in 1948 when architect Eero Saarine unveiled his famous Womb Chair, a commissioned piece for Florence Knoll, the famous architect, interior designer and furniture designer. Coco Chanel launched the fabric’s popularity in French fashion when she first included bouclé in her 1954 collection. The trend expanded quickly to include sweaters, handbags, shoes, and accessories.
The backstory on bouclé
The name comes from the French boucler, which means “to curl” and can refer to both the fabric and the yarn from which it is made. Bouclé is a heavy textile made from loops of yarn, which can range from tiny circlets to large curls and is best known for its visual texture and soft comfort. Similar fabrics include twill, which mirrors its visual texture, and chenille and cashmere, which mirror its softness.
Mid-century turned modern
This design movement has transitioned to modern decor so easily because the texture of bouclé offers depth and interest without the need for patterns. The soft aesthetic of curved edged seating lends itself well to the thick and sumptuous upholstery, which offers beautiful balance to the clean simplicity of modern design elements. More delicate blends, such as silk, alpaca, and mohair, make great throw blankets or pillows, making beds and sofas add an irresistible softness to beds and sofas.
